Robert C. McIntyre
1930 - 2022
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our Founder and CEO, Mr. Robert C. McIntyre.
“Bob,” along with his wife Mary, founded Oakwood School in 1971 and was deeply devoted to our staff and students. In an address to staff at the 40th Anniversary Celebration in 2011, he shared, “Each one of you contributes to the success story of every Oakwood child. As we work together, encourage each other, and support our own areas of expertise; progress will be made. As we look at the needs of the total child, understanding the utter uniqueness of that particular child, and gearing all we do in light of that: they will thrive.”
His principled stewardship over the past 50 years paved the way for the school to break ground in the fall of 2020 for a complete renovation and expansion of its current location on Braddock Road. It is through Bob’s incredible legacy that Oakwood stands poised to open its doors in September of 2023 to an expanded enrollment and continued contributions to special education in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.
Bob was the founding President of the Virginia Association of Special Education Facilities (VAISEF) and President of the Virginia Council of Private Education. He served on several advisory committees for the Commonwealth of Virginia and was instrumental in the development of strategic plans and services for special education students across the state.
In 1980, Bob was awarded the prestigious Kuhn Barnett Award, “presented to a person selected for exemplary and meritorious service on behalf of exceptional children at the state level, and/or service in Virginia Council for Exceptional Children.” He carried his advocacy overseas, advising and lecturing in multiple countries about the importance of supporting students with learning disabilities.
The Oakwood School National Board of Directors, Trustees, as well as current and past staff, offer sincerest condolences to the McIntyre family.
Services will be held at Truro Anglican Church 10520 Main Street, Fairfax, VA 22030. Calling hours are Thursday, June 23rd from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Truro Church Chapel. The funeral will be Friday, June 24th at 11:00 a.m. in the Truro Church Sanctuary.
