For over 50 years Oakwood School has inspired students and families to gain confidence in their learning and access tools and strategies to help themselves advocate in classrooms and workplaces around the country.

We understand the importance of early intervention and the science behind accurate and quality reading instruction.

Our Outreach and Literacy services are designed to support students struggling with reading or writing without requiring enrollment in our school.

Student & Family Support

Each dyslexia screening and/or literacy assessment consists of an initial consultation and review of a child's academic history before the in-person assessment is completed. After the in-person assessment, parents/guardians will review the findings and receive a written report with measurable data and recommendations for the next steps.

Dyslexia Screening

This screening collects data to understand each child's unique abilities and challenges while looking for characteristics associated with Dyslexia. This process can identify the likelihood of Dyslexia but will not provide a diagnosis.

provide referrals and resources for next steps
provide key data to supplement a special education service eligibility application or IEP goal planning

Comprehensive Literacy Assessment

This evaluation identifies specific areas of weak reading skill development. The assessment measures various components of literacy and targets areas of remediation. This process will provide a blueprint for informing and improving current reading instruction.

How can these assessments be used to support your child?

identify strengths and weakness in child's reading skills and development
measure a child's decoding, spelling, fluency, and comprehension skills
determine accommodations or strategies for remediation
provide data to supplement a special education service eligibility application or IEP goal planning

Your final written report will provide recommendations that may be useful to teachers, tutors, and/or learning centers.

Educational Workshops & Presentations

Dyslexia for a Day Simulation: this workshop is designed to spark empathy and begin a conversation about the impact Dyslexia has on everyday tasks including reading and writing.
Early Identifiers of Dyslexia: this presentation will provide key research on the importance of early screening for Dyslexia, identify "red flags", and share the direct benefits of determining early challenges in reading.
What is Structured Literacy? (and why it matters): this presentation will provide a clear definition and key components of Structured Literacy including the research behind teaching children to read. It will also provide a breakdown of the comparison between Structured Literacy and Balanced Literacy.
Why Writing is Challenging for Students with Dyslexia: this presentation will address why written expression is difficult for students by unpacking all the skills necessary within the process of writing. Working memory and scaffolded instruction will be highlighted.

Coaching for Educators & School Learning Specialists

Student Record Review

Student Record Review & Consultation: for learning center directors, reading specialists, and academic supervisory staff at independent and private schools. Review of student academic records may be beneficial for professionals looking for guidance on teaching methods, strategies, or techniques to support individual student learning disabilities or challenges as outlined in neuro psychoeducational, or other assessment results.
