Former Oakwood Student TestimonialI started at Oakwood in the 4th grade as a shy, dyslexic, who was scared of learning long division. I was welcomed into a small classroom where I was able to tell my teachers my worries about transferring schools and how I didn’t know if I was at everyone’s level. The genuine care I received in just those first weeks made me realize that this was a place to meet me where I was and help me grow from there. Every teacher I had at Oakwood showed me attention and care. I remember lunch time conversations and after school art classes. Even years after graduating I still come back to visit my teachers, and every one remembers me. The staff and teachers at Oakwood not only gave me the tools I needed to navigate the world as a neurodivergent person, but truly cared about me and my interests. It was in the once a week art classes that I found my passion and love in life. Oakwood supported me through my formative years, not only fostering my passions but giving me the confidence to pursue them. Jordan Lynn |

Our son Zachary Thornhill entered Oakwood in the 5th grade after we were finally able to find a school that fit his learning style. He thrived and found great success and learned organizational skills that enabled him to have self confidence. Zach is now a Physics major at GMU and will graduate this year. We cannot thank Oakwood enough for the support and wonderful teachers that allowed Zach to be where he is today. We are super proud of our smart young man and know he will continue to do great things with his degree.

Former Oakwood Student TestimonialI attended Oakwood between 1998 and 2001. Prior to attending Oakwood, I recall having difficulties with communication, particularly with adults, as well as an inability to perform basic reasoning skills that others seem to take for granted; mathematical word problems for example were a constant struggle as was English literature. Often teachers reported I appeared attentive but failed to complete or turn in assignments for apparently no reason. My time in Oakwood addressed many if not all of my areas of need with a combination program of class work; individual attention; and small group learning. A particular area I now look back on as key to my later success was the use of computers, digital writing devices, and work using a calculator. In a world that was on the brink of a technical revolution I could have been left behind, unable to type, or use databases/internet to find information. Due to the small classes every student had access to devices and attention from the teacher. William Long |
