Discover Oakwood
We discovered Oakwood after meeting with an advocate from Decoding Dyslexia Virginia. During our discussion, we learned the importance of dyslexic students being in an environment that fosters not only the growth and advancement of their skills but also an environment that supports every aspect of their learning process, no matter the subject.
Soon after that meeting we connected with Oakwood's Admissions Director, Muriel Jedlicka, and realized the school would give our daughter what was missing from her previous academic experiences.
At her last school, she was a very successful student but worked 10 times as hard to keep pace. Many of the challenges she faced were due to the fact that her previous school was unable to carve out the time she needed for additional support.
Since coming to Oakwood we have already noticed some major changes:
- Before Oakwood, reading felt overwhelming to her, and at times she felt intimidated by how others would perceive her. But in just three months at Oakwood her confidence in reading increased.
- She now understands that dyslexia does not define her. Dyslexia is just one of the many attributes that make her unique.
- She is ready to do hard things! Being in the supportive environment that Oakwood provides has fueled her desire to succeed.
The few months that we have been a part of the Oakwood community have been transformative for our family and we hope that other families have a chance to experience the benefits of an Oakwood education.
The Johnson Family story originally appeared in an Oakwood School Development publication shared in December 2023.
