Social Affective
The Social Affective program reinforces our commitment to developing the whole child. This time in the schedule allows teachers to focus on developing a strong classroom community.
Classes are taught in the reinforcement of social skills and character development. Students learn ways of showing kindness, empathy, and understanding with their peers. They also learn a lot about themselves through a variety of programs, books, and activities led by staff and student leaders.
Social-Emotional Strategies for Students
At Oakwood we give students the social-emotional tools to be successful in high school and life. We teach them about the brain basics including the function of the pre-frontal cortex and its interaction with the limbic system. We encourage a growth mindset and provide the language to encourage perseverance and a positive attitude toward learning. We use mindfulness to incorporate a calm approach to finding focus and optimizing performance during stressful situations.
We have partnered with The Social Institute to continue supporting students in the development of healthy, positive relationships with technology and devices. The positive, student-respected approach embraces our student-centered teaching philosophy. Technology is a part of students' every day experience both at home and in school.
During social affective we helping students learn strategies and techniques for avoiding distractions during studying, maintaining a positive digital presence, and setting appropriate safety and privacy boundaries online.
