Oakwood School is seeking a long-term substitute teacher for middle school to join our team starting February 2025. This temporary role will encompass the responsibilities of a classroom teacher through the end of the academic year.

Oakwood serves bright students in grades 1-8 with learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and ADHD. Our approach centers on small class sizes, multisensory teaching, and individualized instruction. Each classroom has two teachers for 10-13 homeroom students, allowing for differentiated instruction and a collaborative work environment. With approximately 115 students, 22 classroom teachers, and a robust team of academic coaches and leaders, we are committed to fostering a supportive environment for students and staff.

As the Long-Term Substitute, you will:

• Team-teach social studies to a single group of sixteen 7th-grade students.
• Independently teach reading, writing, and math to a small group of up to seven students in 6th and 7th grades.
• Participate in weekly collaboration meetings with cohort teachers and academic leadership to ensure cohesive and effective instruction.
• Lesson plan and teach with support from current academic leadership.
• Engage with students and families through regular communication and progress updates. 
• Participate in the academic reporting process with support from cohort teachers and academic leadership.

What we're looking for:

• Required: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
• Required: 1-2 years of classroom teaching experience.
• Required: Experience working with children with diverse learning styles.
• Preferred: Orton-Gillingham training or certification.
• Preferred: 2-5 years of teaching experience in a special education setting. 
• Preferred: Current Virginia Teaching License with endorsement in Special Education or Learning Disabilities.

• Foster strong relationships with students and families through regular communication and progress updates. 
• Participate in weekly collaboration meetings with cohort teachers and academic leadership to ensure cohesive and effective instruction.
• Prepare student progress reports on a monthly, quarterly, and semi-annual basis.

• Required: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
• Required: 2-3 years of teaching experience in special education or working with students with learning differences.
• Preferred: Virginia Teaching License, or eligibility to obtain one, with an endorsement in special education.
• Preferred: Master's degree in special education or related field.

Oakwood School is seeking candidates for the position of part-time Substitute Teachers with appropriate experience to serve elementary and middle school students with learning disabilities and dyslexia.

Required Qualifications

• At least 21 years of age with completed bachelor's degree
• Classroom teaching experience (special education or subject-specific)

Preferred Qualifications

• At least 2 years of professional experience in a special education classroom
• VA Teaching License, current or expired
• Orton-Gillingham knowledge and experience

Some training is available to candidates who have teaching experience and an understanding of specific learning disabilities (i.e. former special education teachers, college students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate level teaching programs).

Oakwood School is seeking candidates for the position of part-time Field Trip Drivers to transport teachers and students in school vehicles, specifically the school's 14-seat school bus.

Field trips occur between the hours of 8:45 am and 2:30 pm Tuesday through Friday during the academic year. On average, Oakwood takes 10-15 trips a year. Candidates should be confident navigating a 14-passenger bus in Northern Virginia/DC area traffic, traveling up to two hours at a time in one direction, be over the age of 25, and possess a valid driver's license (CDL is not required).

Required Qualifications

• At least 25 years of age
• Hold a current/valid driver's license (CDL not required)

Candidates will be required to provide documentation of a safe driving record in the state of Virginia and pass necessary background checks required to work with students in an elementary/middle school setting.

Physical Requirements of Field Trip Driver:

Candidates must be able to meet certain physical demands required for a Field Trip Driver with or without reasonable accommodation. Candidates must possess good vision, including the ability to see long distances and peripheral vision to monitor traffic and surroundings effectively. Excellent hearing is essential for understanding instructions, communicating with students, and being aware of potential safety hazards. Physical strength and dexterity are necessary for operating bus controls, including steering, braking, and adjusting mirrors. Candidates should also be capable of sitting for extended periods and have the flexibility to turn, twist, and reach to ensure proper vehicle operation. Overall, field trip drivers must maintain physical fitness and agility to perform their duties safely and efficiently.

Oakwood School is seeking candidates for the position of part-time Lunch Monitors to supervise students during lunch and recess to ensure a safe and orderly environment in the cafeteria, playground, and gymnasium. This role involves monitoring student behavior and assisting the lunch duty team. 

Required Qualifications

• At least 21 years of age
• Experience working with elementary or middle school-aged students in a supervisory role

Preferred Qualifications

• At least 2 years of experience in a supervisory role at an elementary or middle school

Candidates must be prepared to commit to a routine schedule. Lunch monitors are needed between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm Monday through Friday. Preference is given to candidates who are available multiple days each week during the school year. 

All candidates will be required to submit and pass state and federal-level background checks. 

Physical Requirements of Lunch Monitor Position:

Candidates must be able to meet certain physical demands required for a Lunch Monitor with or without reasonable accommodation. Candidates must possess the ability to stand, walk, and move around uneven terrain to access various areas of the school campus.  Additionally, excellent verbal communication skills are necessary to interact with students and staff to maintain safety and respond to instructions, calls for assistance, or potential safety concerns. This position may also require occasional lifting of materials and equipment. Lunch monitors should be prepared to work outside in varying degrees of weather, including exposure to sun, rain, wind, and cold temperatures.
