Ask Oakwood: Preparing for Parent-Teacher Conferences

At the beginning of the school year, we have several opportunities for families and teachers to connect and learn. Student Evaluations in August facilitate introductions and establish a baseline of academic skills, Back to School Night in September provides a look at curriculum and routines, and Parent-Teacher Conferences in October offer productive conversation among the individuals on a student's support team (teachers, parents/caregivers, administrators).

Why conferences are important?

Conferences build relationships and offer space for transparent, open channels of communication. Each adult member of the team can offer a different point of view on individual student's strengths and challenges, ensuring that collaboration continues to support growth in all aspects of learning.

During the conference, teachers share beginning-of-the-year assessments, work samples, and anecdotal observations. The intent is to provide a well-rounded picture of students, with ways for them to contribute and grow within the Oakwood community.

This is also the time when teachers present each student's unique Individualized Instructional Plan, not to be confused with an IEP or Individualized Education Plan. The IIP is an Oakwood-specific document crafted with measurable goals for each student. Goals are designed to foster students' development of effective strategies for academic, organizational, and interpersonal growth. Throughout the year, each student's support team instructs and guides students to help them meet their IIP goals.

How families can engage with teachers:

As valuable members of the team, there are several ways that parents or caregivers can prepare for upcoming conferences.

Share the Joys: Let teachers know which experiences, interactions, and opportunities your child has found positive, whether in or out of the classroom. Celebrating these moments, no matter how small, helps build a sense of belonging and reinforces a safe, supportive environment where your child feels valued. We want students to feel recognized for their strengths and successes. It fosters confidence and encourages them to embrace learning challenges with a more open and resilient mindset.

Ask Hard Questions: This is a great opportunity to gain clarity on any aspect of the program, including academic, social, or emotional support, that you may not fully understand. If something does not seem to work for your child, don't hesitate to bring it up. Discussing these issues openly allows the team to evaluate the situation and collaborate on personalized solutions. Together, you can ensure that your child’s unique needs are met, fostering an environment where they can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Opportunities, not Obstacles: The conversation will include transparent sharing of both strengths and challenges. Teachers know that identifying what needs to be taught will ultimately empower students to build their skill sets with strategies and the ability to advocate for themselves. Please be open to hearing teachers' observations and ask for ways to support the strategic plan.

Every Piece of the Puzzle Counts: Please share any changes in schedules, routines, circumstances, friendships, or family dynamics to keep all parties in the loop. Whether it's a shift in a student's after-school activities, a new friendship, or challenges at home, every detail helps us provide more personalized and thoughtful support. Understanding the outside factors that may affect a student's emotional, social, and academic day is crucial in creating a learning environment that is responsive, inclusive, and nurturing. Your insights ensure we are all working together to meet your child's unique needs.

We hope that Parent-Teacher Conferences offer information, collaboration, and insight into all the ways your child is working hard at school. At Oakwood, we appreciate the partnership with families to be able to support and educate our students.
