About Us

Welcome to Oakwood School

For over 50 years, Oakwood School has been a place of possibility for students in grades 1-8 with specific learning disabilities. Located in Annandale, VA, just outside Washington D.C., Oakwood serves students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and other language-based learning differences from Northern Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

At Oakwood, every child receives systematic, explicit, and direct instruction from teachers trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach. This consistent, research-based teaching helps students build essential academic skills, confidence, and independence within a nurturing, supportive, learning environment.

Oakwood School provides a multisensory educational program in which students with learning differences are guided to achieve their unique academic and social potential in a nurturing community environment.

Oakwood School Mission

Oakwood serves bright, capable learners who benefit from a school that understands how they learn and teaches accordingly through structured, research-based instruction.

At Oakwood, We Believe ...

  • Every Child Has Unique Potential
    • Your child has strengths that deserve recognition and challenges that deserve understanding. At Oakwood, we embrace both, helping students grow in confidence while discovering how they learn best through multisensory instruction, structured literacy, and executive function support.
  • Learning Happens in Community
    • Education is most powerful when students, families, and educators work together. Oakwood fosters a collaborative, team-based approach that brings together teachers, specialists, and families, ensuring your child receives consistent, individualized support.
  • Strong Foundations Lead to Bright Futures
    • Your child deserves an education grounded in research-based instruction that builds foundational literacy, math, and study skills - not just accommodations. Oakwood students graduate ready for high school with the confidence, strategies, and self-advocacy skills they need to succeed.
  • Innovation Drives Progress
    • Oakwood combines proven teaching methodologies with thoughtful technology integration, including SMART Boards, a 1:1 device program, keyboarding instruction, and guided conversations about safe, ethical technology use - helping students strengthen essential academic and digital skills.
