Our program is based on the philosophy that students learn
in different ways and at different paces. We group the students
in small classes based on several criteria to better meet
their learning needs. Our approach includes a balance of traditional,
remedial and compensatory strategies, using a variety of proven
multisensory teaching methods, materials and modifications.
We help students determine their learning styles and strategies
that enable them to be more active and efficient learners.
Each of ten classrooms serve between 8 and 13 students taught
by two teachers. Our students range in age from six to fifteen
years old. Our well-trained staff helps students develop strong
reading, math and writing skills in even smaller skill level
groups.
Science and Social Studies are taught in whole class groups
using a multisensory approach. These subjects focus on increasing
students knowledge through hands-on activities while
also developing the study skills necessary for success. Study
skills and organization are reinforced at all levels, throughout
all subject areas. Appropriate homework loads reinforce the
development of good study skills. Through our structured approach,
organizational skills are directly taught and reinforced.
Daily physical education classes stress skill development
with individual improvement as the focus. An adaptive
P. E. instructor encourages students at all levels of physical
development to grow in skills and to be a productive team
member.
A well-equipped computer lab, as well as several computers
in all classrooms, supports the academic process. Laptops
permit even greater access and mini-labs throughout the building.
We understand the importance of technology in helping our
students succeed. Computer skills such as keyboarding and
word processing are taught to allow students to communicate
more effectively. The integrated computer instruction which
occurs at least two times per week enhances the curriculum
and aids in developing necessary technology skills.
Art enhances the curriculum in many ways. An art teacher provides
instruction every other week with additional art activities
led by the classroom teachers on a regular basis. Music appreciation,
interactive assembly programs, and field trips reinforce classroom
instruction. Pragmatic language classes are provided in certain
classrooms to help students develop better social skills such
as initiating and maintaining a conversation.
